Blockchain.com Partners with Unstoppable Domains – Companies Launch First Branded Top-Level Domain
Blockchain.com has been a pioneer in the crypto space for quite some time since the company launched the first bitcoin (BTC) block explorer in 2011. This week, the company announced a partnership with digital identity company Web3. Unstoppable Domains. The startup is an identity firm specializing in Web3 services and a domain name provider with 2.4 million registered usernames.
The two firms have announced the launch of Unstoppable Domains, the first ever branded top-level domain, to be called .blockchain. In the coming weeks, Blockchain.com announces that all 83 million Blockchain.com wallet users will be able to create a free .blockchain domain name. A .blockchain domain name can replace a long alphanumeric crypto wallet address, and funds can be sent to a human-readable name such as “sarah.blockchain” instead of using a long address.
.blockchain names can also be used for Web3 identifiers to enable users to interact with decentralized applications (dapps), marketplaces, metaverse applications, and social media platforms. Lane Kasselman, chief business officer of Blockchain.com, believes the new .blockchain feature will make it easier for millions of users to use the company’s non-custodial wallet.
“With the .blockchain domain, our users can not only send and receive cryptocurrency as easily as email, but also own their Web3 identity,” Kasselman said in a statement at the time of the announcement. “Our partnership with Unstoppable Domains marks the first custom top-level domain (TLD) and gives us a unique way to share the .blockchain name with millions of Blockchain.com wallet users.”
On Friday, Unstoppable Domains also revealed that .blockchain domains will also be available through the company’s web portal. Once an NFT domain name is claimed, it is retained by the user forever. The firm uses the Polygon blockchain to mint NFT domain names and there are no minting or renewal fees with this name.
