Authorities in Abkhazia are stepping up efforts to curb cryptocurrency mining amid power outages during the winter months. The government of the self-proclaimed Georgian region announced that it was taking measures to prevent the import of mining equipment.
Headquarters to combat illegal mining of crypto-currencies is being created in Abkhazia
Police in Abkhazia are conducting daily raids to identify mining facilities illegally connected to the power grid and inspect previously closed crypto farms, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the partially recognized republic in northwestern Georgia said. Press release.
The Department also stated that it is closely monitoring the activities of individuals and entities providing services for the supply and maintenance of devices designed to mint digital coins in order to prevent the importation of mining equipment into the territory, which is still prohibited.
In addition, by order of President Aslan Bzhaniya, a republican headquarters was created to combat illegal cryptocurrency mining. It consists of the heads of the Ministry of Economy, the State Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Customs Committee and other departments.
The body was headed by Prime Minister Alexander Ankvab, who demanded that the region’s power engineers investigate all cases of illegal connection of mining farms to the distribution network, the government press service reports. He is quoted by the Russian business news portal RBC:
The situation in the power industry is extremely difficult, so the fight against mining, along with other measures, should significantly reduce the load on the infrastructure.
Ankvab said that all unauthorized installation and operation of transformer substations should be eliminated with the help of law enforcement agencies, and stressed that the leaders of the power grids are personally responsible for changing the current situation. The prime minister instructed customs officials to detect and stop attempts to import mining equipment.
Over the past few years, many residents of Abkhazia have turned to mining digital currencies as a source of additional income, and the government blames energy-intensive production for the republic’s growing electricity shortage.
The Russian-backed de facto state temporarily banned cryptocurrency mining and hardware imports in 2018 to deal with the energy crisis. In 2021, the ban was extended until spring 2022 and then extended again.
