But metaverse environments, a futuristic take on remote work solutions, are also causing workers to worry about their bosses’ ability to control their actions.
Elon Musk’s dislike of remote work, “digital presentism” seen as a problem
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Spacex, is not a fan of remote work. In the leaked memo Addressing Tesla workers, Musk said telecommuting was no longer acceptable, telling them they must spend more than 40 hours a week at the company’s facilities or they would be fired. Musk has even criticized other companies that allow remote work, saying they haven’t delivered an amazing product “for a while”.
New data indicates that Musk’s fears are not unfounded. According to study completed by Qatalog and GitLab, “digital presentism” becomes a problem. This concept refers to a group of activities that remote workers perform in addition to their normal work to show their superiors and colleagues that they really work during the day. The study found that remote workers spend 67 minutes doing these tasks each day, meaning that more than 5.5 hours a week are spent doing this.
However, working on the basis of the metaverse, the new way to work remotely, also comes with its own challenges.
Workers fear being watched in the Metaverse
With the emergence of the metaverse as a new technology, some companies are experimenting with bringing remote workers into the metaverse in the workplace. However, according to a survey published Expressvpn, this approach also has its drawbacks, causing concern for some workers.
A survey of 1,500 US workers and 1,500 employers found that 63% of employees are concerned that their employers may collect their data while working in the metaverse. Similarly, surveillance is an important issue, with 51% of these workers worried that their employers will be collecting real-time location data, and 50% are worried about real-time screen monitoring.
The workers who are more concerned about these issues are those who come from companies with more than 500 employees. Other experiments have been conducted using metaverse technology for remote work. Researchers at the University of Coburg, University of Cambridge, University of the Seas and Microsoft Research have found that current metaverse technology is still not ready to support remote work applications.
