Explaining why Bitcoin Academy aims to educate the residents of the Marcy Houses, the project website notes:

The vision of Bitcoin is that it has no barriers, but the barrier is the lack of access to financial education. It is still difficult to use for everyday needs. In addition, people need devices and data plans.

By offering education, providing knowledge to the community, and removing some barriers, Bitcoin Academy hopes that the residents of Marcy Houses will learn about Bitcoin and finance.

The project is funded by Dorsey and Jay-Z.

Interested individuals from Marcy Houses can attend classes in person or online. Both types are free and will run from June 22 to September 7. In-person classes will take place twice a week in the evenings and include a dinner for attendees.

Members of the program will receive MiFi devices, an annual limited data plan, and smartphones if required. To ensure that the younger generation is not left out, Bitcoin Academy has created a Crypto Kids Camp for kids aged 5 to 17.

Black Bitcoin Billionaire Founder Lamar Wilson and Naja J. Roberts, Founder and Chief Visionary of the Crypto Blockchain Plug, will lead classes. Wilson has been featured on The Breakfast Club and Vice News, while Roberts has appeared on Afro Tech and Fast Money on CNBC.

The Bitcoin Academy will be powered by personal grants from Jay-Z and Dorsey. Block and the Sean Carter Foundation will provide local support. While the project is currently focused on Marcy’s homes, Bitcoin Academy aims to use it in more areas in the future.

Stepping Up Efforts to Streamline Bitcoin Education

The news comes after New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he would love it if the city could introduce cryptography and blockchain education into its schools. He shared that some young people interested in the operation of cryptocurrency stopped him in the street.

Adams claims to have explained that BTC “is a new way to pay for goods and services around the world.” He added that it is vital for New York City to open schools to educate children about this new technology and share knowledge about this new way of thinking when it comes to buying goods and services.

El Salvador, the first country to make Bitcoin (BTC) legal tender, is also committed to educating its population about BTC. In November 2021, the Salvadoran government said it would build 20 new Bitcoin schools as part of its My New School initiative. President Naib Bukele said these schools will help strengthen El Salvador’s crypto infrastructure.
