Norwegian Authorities Seize Crypto Worth $6M From Axie Infinity Heist With FBI’s Help
Norwegian authorities, in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Justice (DOJ), allegedly confiscated about $6 million stolen from last year’s Axie Infinity heist. “This is the largest confiscation of cryptocurrencies ever carried out by the Norwegian police,” Norwegian Økokrim said.
Norway and the FBI recover some of the funds stolen in the Axie Infinity attack
Økokrim, Norway’s National Office for the Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime, announced on Thursday that it has confiscated 60 million kroner (roughly $5.8 million) in crypto in connection with the attack on Axie Infinity and Sky Mavis, a company that has developed a non-online video game based on fungible tokens (NFTs).
The Norwegian authorities explained that in cooperation with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI):
Økokrim confiscated around 60 million NOK in cryptocurrency. This is the largest confiscation of cryptocurrency ever carried out by the Norwegian police.
“We are working with the FBI to track cryptocurrencies. This cooperation between countries means that we as a society are stronger in the fight against profit-motivated digital crime,” commented First State Attorney Marianne Bender. However, Økokrim did not provide details of the confiscation.
Axie Infinity was attacked in March last year after Ronin network validators were compromised. At that time, the reported loss was $620 million. “The attacker managed to gain control of four Ronin Sky Mavis validators and a third-party validator operated by Axie DAO,” Sky Mavis said.
According to the FBI, the North Korean hacker group Lazarus was behind the robbery. The hackers launched a large-scale and sophisticated money laundering operation immediately after the attack, Økokrim clarifies.
Last May, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned blender.io cryptomixer. The Treasury Department explained that Blender was used in a money laundering process to rob Axie Infinity in North Korea, processing more than $20.5 million in illegal proceeds.
